Expert Microsystems’ Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) software, sold under the SureSense® brand, uses the most advanced modeling and decision logic solutions available. SureSense is the only available PHM software that fully integrates advanced health monitoring features with validated, patented prognostic capabilities to allow accurate determination of remaining useful life for aging performance critical assets. Our programming philosophy is that one size does not fit all and has led us to develop the most flexible, most accurate and most cost effective PHM product available.
How SureSense Works
SureSense detects failures before they occur in equipment and sensors used in performance critical systems. The software transforms an avalanche of sensor data into actionable knowledge of critical system events impacting system operation, efficiency, reliability and safety.
The monitored asset can be any source of observable data, including for example a machine, a person, a business process, or a computer network. Our decision technology uses four primary steps, these being Prediction, Detection, Diagnosis and Prognosis.
The Prediction step involves the use of one or more models describing the asset when it is operating correctly. For each new observation of the asset, the prediction model is used to estimate the expected values of the observed data parameters.
In the Detection step, the observed data values are compared to their expected values using calibrated fault detection models to determine a pattern of agreement or disagreement between the observed and expected values. The characteristics of any disagreement are also determined.
The Diagnosis step correlates this pattern of agreement or disagreement in the monitored parameters with the most likely normal or abnormal fault state of the asset. The diagnosis is determined using a decision model structured for the known failure modes of the asset.
The Prognosis step uses this condition information to determine the probable remaining useful life of the monitored asset. Several types of prognostic models are used typically as an asset progresses from normal aging into a specific mode of failure.
SureSense Calibration and Monitoring Process
The figure below illustrates the model calibration and monitoring process used in SureSense. The software is self calibrating and can automatically update the operating models for changes due to aging or seasonal operating variations. Monitoring of the asset occurs in real time and alarms and remaining useful life projections are provided to the user automatically.

Diagnostic Monitoring Studio
In order to maximize flexibility and speed of deployment, SureSense is built on a flexible framework architecture, called the Diagnostic Monitoring Studio®.
The core Diagnostic Monitoring Studio is based on open-platform, hardware-neutral technology which avoids the pitfalls found in many less flexible competing products. This allows our customers to plug in existing or newly created application specific modules for their unique situations and rapidly integrate them into their existing systems or products. The Diagnostic Monitoring Studio features patented Mode Partitioning Algorithms to provide highly accurate models of complex systems with extremely low false alarm rates, Automated Adaptive Model Calibration that can adapt to evolving normal asset operating changes that occur as equipment ages, and Automated Uncertainty Estimation to provide very high quality, quantitative decision analysis.
Turn Key PHM Software Solution
For customers who desire a turn key software package we offer a variety of module options that can be mixed and matched to provide the best solution for the unique problems each of our customers face. Each module has a broad range of modeling and analysis tools that are seamlessly integrated with the Diagnostic Monitoring Studio framework. We provide consulting support to help you select the most effective modules and to implement these quickly in the context of your business and application requirements.
Our software can also be rapidly embedded into Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) products to track, analyze and diagnose OEM equipment performance. This is because our modules are implemented as plug-in components that can be individually and directly used within the customer’s OEM product, just as they are used in the graphical Diagnostic Monitoring Studio framework environment.
Return on investment time when implementing SureSense is typically on the order of several months.
